Wrapping You Up in Their Brand

Renea is the Creative Director of JCMA, a digital marketing agency.

The holidays are upon us once again, and I’m excited to see that brands are bringing their “A” game to packaging design. For many companies, holiday packaging is an important part of their branding, and they don’t just do it for fun. Gift packaging:

  • Helps create an emotional connection to their products
  • Encourages gifting
  • Adds perceived value to products
  • Gives a sense of limited-edition

Here are four 2023 packaging trends that have inspired us.

Eco-Friendly

A number of companies are leaning into using recycled materials and reusable gift wrap. This is a great option for companies that are environmentally conscious.

Lush, a body, skin and healthcare brand, is wrapping their products in a reusable fabric wrap that can be reused in multiple ways, including as a headband, scarf and towel.

Hip Holiday Palette

One way to stand out is to ditch the typical green and red holiday colors and lean into unexpected color combinations that will attract younger shoppers.

Tory Burch, a high end fashion brand, is standing out with bold, unexpected colors and patterns. I’ll take some of this eye candy in my stocking, please!

Brand-Centric

Some brands go the elegant route, staying consistent with their brand look and palette, adding a single element that speaks to the holiday season.

Kendra Scott, a jewelry retailer out of Austin, uses its beautiful and bold yellow gift box as its holiday look but ties a white ribbon around it to make it Christmas tree worthy.

Brand Collaborations

Bringing two well-known brands together to create a unique offering is one of the most powerful ways to offer something truly special and gift-worthy during the holidays.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne teamed up with “the princess of polka dots” Yayoi Kusama to create gorgeous packaging that is literally a piece of art.

Louis Vuitton, a high end fashion house, collaborated with Lego to make an amazing 90th anniversary statement. They are celebrating “the art of creation and imagination through the construction of festive scenes made of Legos” in their store windows and have carried that theme into their packaging. Going way beyond packaging, this stunning campaign has gone viral.
